Singham, West Is West, Gandhi To Hitler - Music Review

Singham (2011)
Music: Ajay-Atul

1. Singham ------------------------ 7/10
2. Singham (Remix) ------------ 7/10
If you like arousing songs that inspire you to get out of your shell and face the world with renewed confidence, this one is for you. If you think Sukhwinder Singh possesses the necessary energy in his voice, this one is for you. If you enjoyed Hud Hud Dabangg from Dabangg, this one is for you. The original as well as the Remix are the same, minus the Sanskrit prayer chanting in the Remix. The Remix is also much more strong beats-centric and techno.

3. Saathiyaa -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7/10
4. Saathiyaa (Remix) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7/10
No matter how much we would like to ignore Shreya Ghoshal, it is quite difficult to do so. She maintains her typical soft, melodious voice in this cliched romantic track. There is hardly any experimentation. The song could easily be dismissed as a formula Bollywood love track, but it makes us think: It is still good to listen.

5. Maula Maula ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------6/10
6. Maula Maula (Remix) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6/10
The third and the last original track in this small album, it is another typical Bollywood romance fare. Kunal Ganjawala pleads us to listen to this song with his brilliance, however, this song fails to break the have-already-heard-that barrier.

Final verdict: Overall gets a 6/10. A decent affair here, doing justice to the genre of the movie and still managing to squeeze soft melodies.

West Is West (2011)
Music: Rob Lane, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy

A huge album, characteristic of a western movie, where the album contains numerous instrumentals. However, being an Indo-UK movie, there are quite a few songs here. The album has an overall Punjabi folk overtone, with western jazz interspersed. Also, add to it two 60s Bollywood originals. The overall effect is pretty disappointing from a musical perspective.
  • Aik Alif - For Sufi music fans only. An impressive and straight-to-the-heart devotional song. Add it to your Khwaja Mere Khwaja (from Jodhaa Akbar) collection.

Gandhi To Hitler (2011)
Music: Arvind-Lyton

Not a whole lot to expect from this album. The movie based on the two contemporary leaders of the time have all songs begin with a short Hindi poem, underscoring the mood and message of the song. Unless, you are into pathos mood and those emphasizing Gandhian philosophy, it is virtually unbearable to listen to. 'Legendary balladeer' Bhupen Hazarika's track Vaishnav Jan Toh Tene Kahiye begs a question: What makes him legendary?

A big fail.
