Murder 2, Chillar Party, College Campus - Music Review

Murder 2 (2011)
Music: Harshit Saxena, Sangeet Haldipur, Siddharth Haldipur, Mithoon

1.. Haal-E-Dil ---------------------- 8/10
2. Haal-E-Dil (Acoustic) ------ 8/10
If you have heard and liked songs from prior Emraan Hashmi movies, this one is for you. The style of music resembles a lot to Zara Sa from Jannat, although there is no Pritam here. Romantic, melodious, but not schmaltzy. It has a fair amount of zest that helps us stick to it. The initial gap after the opening is brilliant in the sense, it does not allow the song to fizzle out too soon keeping us interested. The Acoustic version is the same track, with a lot of guitar strumming. However, the likeness between the acoustics in this track and Green Day's Boulevard of Broken Dreams is unmistakable.

3. Phir Mohabbat ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7/10
Another song that utilizes the pause after the opening. However, this song does not have a distinct high point to make the pause any more useful than slow down the song a little. The track is a little slow, and has a heart-broken theme. It is still, soft and harmonious.

4. Tujhko Bhulana --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7/10
Another heartbroken song, although the tempo is pretty up. The playback singers leave the melodious aspect  out the door, but do not screech either. Sangeet Haldipur's style of singing is very similar to that of Vishal Dadlani.

5. Aa Zara -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6/10
Sunidhi Chauhan's versatality is on full display in this song. The track maintains a constant mysterious tone and Sunidhi Chauhan does full justice to the genre. The overall product is not too great, but cannot be dismissed completely.

6. Aye Khuda ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6/10
This is Sufi music, Bollywoodized. The singing style is also kept nicely folkish and coarse to add to it's Sufi flavor. A decent song, only for those metaphysical moments.

Final verdict: Overall gets a 7/10. The entire album is a decent listen, including the remixes as the music directors refrain from killing the song. Some songs miss the mark, but not in a terrible fashion. Good album.

Chillar Party (2011)
Music: Amit Trivedi

This is one of the most significant albums of children's movies lately. Kudos to Amit Trivedi for making the most out of his challenge to deal with this genre of music. He blends rock, grunge with children's genre well to make it palatable for everyone. The end result is not something which will grab headlines, but nevertheless it is a praiseworthy attempt.

  • Chatte Batte - Mohit Chauhan mesmerizes us again with his singing prowess. Although this song will not gain any traction, this is no doubt, one of the best solos by Mohit Chauhan.
  • Tai Tai Phish, Aa Rela Hai Apun - Pretty much the same songs, Amit Trivedi uses the Nashik dhol to create a foot tapping Ganpati style number. The lyrics of the song will sure bring a smile to those who appreciate mumbaiyya Hindi. Certainly entertaining.
  • Ziddi Piddi - An unexpected song in this album. Pretty strong in it's message and tone, the song is replete with war clarions. Fun and energetic.

College Campus (2011)
Music: Atul

Alright. Time for some bashing and pushing around. Is time machine for real? The answer is yes. Udit Narayan was and probably is one of the most prolific singer of 90s to mid 2000s. There are quite a few playback singers who have fallen out of public favor today, like Sonu Nigam and Shaan for example. However, whenever Udit Narayan sings, it throws us right back to the 90s. Yes. Listening to Udit Narayan is the time machine.
  • Tanhai - If someone wants to listen to all of late 90s style of romantic music in one song, listen to Tanhai from this album. It is a confused mix of at least three tunes.
Anyways, terrible album.
